“A Night at the Opera” by Queen from 1975.

For me this is simply one of the greatest albums ever. It feels like the band threw everything at it and the result is stunning. This is the album that completely captures the essence of Queen. Just go and play it real loud. I promise it’ll make your day.

“The Cars” by The Cars from 1978.

This album was massive in the US and is certified 6x Platinum. I guess the singles had a lot more airplay there than in the U.K. That said they were a great new wave band that wrote some fantastic songs. I wasn’t a big fan at the time but enjoy listening to them today as the music is so evocative of that time in my life.

“The Miracle” by Queen from 1989.

The best Queen albums of the 80s were the first one and this one, the last. There are no surprises, we know to expect anything by now in their career! Mercury sings brilliantly on this album and it contains one of my favourite tracks in “I Want it All”.

“Jazz” by Queen from 1978.

This is a really interesting album for me. It has a couple of classic tracks that became big hits but also a curious mix of unexpected styles and songs. It’s quite mellow in places but I really like it.

“A Day at the Races” by Queen from 1976.

This is a worthy follow up to its amazing predecessor. It’s an unapologetic follow up, continuing an ambitious style and delivering a wide range of song types and structures. I wonder sometimes if this eclecticism is the main reason some people struggle to love Queen. The musicality remains top class and I love the diversity of their music.

“Queen II” by Queen from 1974.

Going to be a bit of a Queen day today! I have a wonderful original copy of this album in brilliant condition. The album often seems to get overlooked but it really lays the foundation of the band’s signature overdubbed tracks and multilayer vocals, plus it has such iconic cover art. My favourite Queen albums were all released in the 70s and this is one that should not be ignored.
